The it, the harakiri and a liberal nation...

When you wake up early and listen to Scarlett sing 'dekho baarish ho rahi hai",  there will be no mood to go to office. More than the rain, the most important day of the year (or till next world cup at least) for Indians had arrived. Schools and colleges and companies were closed. Media had gone nuts, Poeple were going nuts. At 5AM my time, India played pakistan and whoever has heard of geography and cricket knows that it cannot get better than that. That is the biggest it we know. It may try but it really should not. From past few weeks, I had heard "Do bhai aur laDaayi, hindustan aur Pakistan", "kaun jitega yeh mahasangram" etc again and again. Finally that was going to end. (But with every end starts a new beginnning. Now I see many have started the comparison with Ramayan. Dhoni is hanuman and world cup is Sanjeevini? WTF!).

Coming back to the sangram, India won.. As expected. Pakistan lost. As expected. Sreesanth and Shoaib did not play. As expected. The expected mini collapse was there. Some got starts and some barely started. He exploited lady luck like a Indian movie villain does a hero's sister. Catches were dropped like hot potatoes. Still let us not take anything away from him or the importance of the innings. 85 aganist arch rivals is as good as it can get (except for something more than 85). Overall it was decent performance by batsmen. The fielding was better than usual. There were few good moments but you could see that they are still reluctant to dive. Raina and Kohli were exceptions though. As usual, Zak bowled well. Munaf and Nehra did even better. I was really surprised to see Munaf charged up. Normally he sleep walks throgh the runup. Yuvi again proved that he is the second best bowler in team India though everyone took 2 wickets apiece.

For Green Goblins, Hafeez and Shafiq were impressive but both gave away their wickets in a moment of stupidity, which they will regret. As will Younis and Misbah, for not getting out in a moment of stupidity. The middle overs overs where these two tried to asphyxiate (Better word for choke...) their own team was interesting. Its a world cup semifinal. The 50 over kind. You do not play the way you want, boys. Unless your last name is Afridi. The ferociously talented Umar Akmal and Sahebzada Afridi tried the heimlich maneuver but the senior members did not let it succeed. Spare a thought for Umar Akmal. He tried his best to resurrect the cause, only to see his senior teammates destroy the hopes. They were so good at it, rumour has it that Graeme Smith has new role models now. Also, South African cricket team has asked them to coach the team once they retire (which would be anytime now).

Also, there was something wrong with Star Cricket database. When Afridi came to bowl, it showed age as 31. Now thats just absurd. Everyone knows that Afridi should either be 18 or 24. There are no other age windows for him. He is like an elf. He has Super strength, does not age and never understood human concept (for sensible cricket). See, he does not understand what logic is and is capable of hitting the ball far and wide and shoot the ball out of his hands at great speeds. Jokes apart, it was good captaincy from him. Leading a time bomb of a team which can destroy everything including itself (and presses self destruction button so often) is not easy. They always had good players take up captaincy but nobody was good as a captain. Sahebzada has always been passionate for the game (he even bit the ball when he felt that it was a threat, a la Mike Tyson) and at times makes surprisingly intelligent decisions. There is some logic there somewhere. Need to get that out more often then.

What happens when you have Sunny, Shastribot , Rameez and Wasim Akram in Commentary box? Yes, exactly. Cliches and biased opinions. Thats what happened. Noone was ready to let it go. Rameez kept telling this was Pakistan's game to lose. In the end two senior members showed him he was right. They even Saurav Ganguly with them. He struggled with words like he did with his contacts. He never looked comfortable with them. But it was refreshing to hear a new voice. And he is yet to learn the cliches used by the others. Aaand hey. No Arun Lal or Siva. It was good.

Did you see Soniyaji madam and Rahul baba watching the match? Mr Singh was behind a bulletproof glass wall with his Pakistani counterpart. But Madam and baba were with the crowd. More brownie points. I did not see any BJP leaders. I'm sure its a conspiracy by the governement. Ms Swaraj (Ashish Shakya, the best blogger according to me, calls her Raghu Ram of Parliament. Could not agree more) and Gadkari have not said anything till now. But truth will come out soon. I had few questions. Do they play cricket in Italy? Who explained the rules and scores to the mother and son? Was Mr Singh ready with his apology speech in case India had lost? Would Thackeray have allowed Pakistan to play in Mumbai if they had won? Why is Raj allowing Non Marathi players and commentators? Will there be Marathi commentary?

There was another rumour that Rahul baba was there to see Poonam Pandey. The lady who looks like a malnourished kaamwali bai and was unknown till few days ago, came to news by telling that she will bare it all in case men in blue win. (Congrats Poonam. You just got selected for next Bigg Boss and You are prettier than Dolly Bindra. well.. I take that last comment back. Who isn't.) Poonam was ready to give a 'private' show to the boys or do it right in the stadium if rules allowed. She was not there in stadium. Poonam, some advice, include Sharad Pawar next time. Im not saying Mr Pawar is not of good character, but he will not let go of anything that can bring some publicity.

When did India become so liberal? Sure there are lot of things going on in private. But public announcement of such things were frowned upon at one time. Now we have Sherilyns, Rakhis and Mallikas blurting out so many 'liberal' statements. Indian media talks so much about values and morality etc when someone attacks them. But they glorify these people. Ash has put on weight? Amitabh went to loo? There you go half an hour covered. Everyone needs news. Media to fill the time and Celebs to fill the bank accounts. All western influence you see. Where are the Mutaliks and Thackerays?

Cricket.. and Whats wrong Scarlett?

Its been couple of days since I welcomed Scarlett. Sadly Scarlett is not in right mood. You see, It has been raining ever since and the weather is gloomy. No. stop it. We are not going to make a those days joke. We are mature now. Anyways, I like rain and I like getting drenched in rain (No, I dont sing and dance.. ). But there is something in this Charlotte rain that makes you very lazy. Only time you get up from the bed is either to fill yourself or empty. Its cold outside, gloomy and cold and well.. just gloomy and cold... Going to office seems such a horrendous task in such a weather. Most people try woking from home. Well, thats even worse. Its ok if you have work. Else, its too boring. You do not have anyone to talk to.

Whole week you wait for these two days. And when it actually arrives, you do not do anything. Now a days at least we have some task.. Of searching couple of cars. Me and my roommate are searching for cars. (Any help is appreciated.) From past few weeks we have been searching for a car and we still have not found the right one. Finding my life partner was easier than this (No offense meant sweetheart..). Usually on Sunday evenings you start getting frustrated at the fact that you have not done anything and decide that next weekend will be different. I have taken that decision more than 40 times myself.

Why don't I go and get a life you say? Good question. I have forgotten what it means to go out with friends. We had a pretty good group once upon a time. We had lot of fun trips. Now everyone has his own bag of burdens to carry. So thats that. May be its just that people here are mostly bummed by work so much that weekends most prefer to laze around. Its like there are two moods on weekends. Lazy and Very lazy. By the way, if you have a regular cell phone (I have a *clears throat* iPhone) type onsite, one of the options you can see is "morgue". Also, cricket has not started yet.

Speaking of cricket, Ponting scored a century before Indian team punished his team like a naughty victorian era child. This may be his last stint as captain. With bizarre choices and even bizarre attitude, he is trying to convince himself that he has much left in him. But its more like an old man going to pubs to score. Some may pity him but nobody would believe what he says. But he deserves some respect as a batsman. As a cricketer, not much. He has been the epitome of what Australian cricket stands for. But as a batsman, he has been maginificient. At least till couple of years ago. I dont like him but still I do consider his 140 vs India in 2003 WC final as one of the finest I have watched. It may as well be marked as the finest ODI innings by an Australian.

India played pretty well to send back the champions.. Except for Gambhir, who at one point decided he is a headless chicken and started running all over the place. Yuvraj is making the KG king Inzy proud with his batting. Inzy still wouldnt approve your runnign between wickets though. A weighted (get it??) batsman scores with his bat, not legs. Next stop Mohali. Arch rivals playing their 5th encounter in worldcup. Can India continue their unbeaten run? There is video that says India may lose as bookies have put lot of money. Well. I do not believe in it. I have not seen Arnab Goswami talk about it. If the GMan doesnt wage a war, it probably is not true. Also, Aaj Tak has not had a special yet.

We will be watching the biggest drama of this world cup hopefully. We have had all England matches in group for thrills but this should be better than that. Indian strong batting lineup which is one batting powerplay away from hara kiri are facing Pakistani bowling attack who can commit hara kiri anytime they want. Its Nehra who is horrible in front of the wicket vs Kamran who is horrible behind it. Bhajji who can slap his Indian teammate vs Shoaib who can go one step better and hit the teammate with a bat, two batsmen of Pak vs two bowlers of India, Its the man who defies all common sense vs well.. India does not have any one to match Afridi.. Afridi is someone who can rip any team apart. He can harm the opponents or he can harm his own team. Lets hope its the Second one. As usual, let the best team win. Sorry Pakistan. You played well. Thanks for the entertainment . See ya.

Hello Scarlett...

Ah.. The spring is here... The Scarlett Johansson (Ok if you are not a Scarlett fan, think of Natalie Portman.. Or Rani Mukherjee.. But seriously. Its Scarlett friggin' Johansson..) of all seasons is here. This is quite clearly the best time of the year (Yes. I'm not allergic to pollens). Nature has moved on from the Angelina Jolie phase (Winter.. cold and Ugly yet some people like it) and made everyone realize how pretty it actually is. Being someone who likes fashion, it makes me glad to see designer short skirts/hot pants and Ts all around.. They may carry pretty girls.. I am not aware. Being the committed happily married person that I am, my eyes are focused.

Spring is here everyone... Be happy...

This is the time when all the Indians in this place start playing cricket. By evening everyone tries to go to a school ground where the highschool boys play football. Not the original beautiful game. This is the one where you have people dressed like warriors and aim to kill or maim each other and blame everything on the elliptical foot long thing they call the "ball". Its like a war.. But of course a war has less casualties. I never understood the rules. They always try to make sure that nobody is holding the ball.. Why teach kids to be violent? Whats the whole purpose? Manly? balderdash. Its like watching Andrew Symonds and Matty Hayden do ballet.

Coming back to cricket.. Of course the school people do not want us to play cricket there. No. Don't use the word racism.. Its just that they have neatly mowed the grass for the football practice and in order to play cricket, we have.. um.. destroyed the 22X2 yards in the middle. By the way, we do have a designated cricket ground here. Somthing I never expected in Amrika. It will remind you of New Zealand grounds. Its scenic and its very small. And its inside a park. The park also has frisbee golf. All around the park amidst trees you have 18 markers to aim to. So there is no shortage of Gora's staring at all the Indians playing odd brother of baseball.

We do have a Intra-company tournament as well. You can see mostly unfit guys dressed in athletic clothing huffing and puffing (Puffing is quite true. Most of them come so that they can smoke without the wife knowing). There are some good players. Now since the ground is small and most of the other players attack like Manjrekar, defend like Maninder Singh, bowl like a combination of Agarkar and Raju, its fairly easy for those good players to make a fool of everyone else like me. Oh and we have a team too. Its called C4, after the explosive. The tagline says "Blast radius is greater than the ground radius". Our captain came up with that. Doesn't make sense. You would hv assumed that it means hitting sixes. But thats not true. We fold up and hope that their team is worse than ours (kinda like Indian batting Powerplay vs West Indian batting against spin).

Spring also means time for outings has returned. We are usually not very enthusiastic to go out during the cold and also sunset happens by 5/5:30 PM here. People become lazy to go out and snack their way through the evenings (And most of the people are from Chennai. When u put them here and if temperature goes below zero, you can see many many layers of clothing. Like Victorian ladies.). Very few people can survive the cool weather comfortably (Are you thinking of Anil Kapoor, God's greatest tribute to body hair and the mascot of the Grizzlies? if you are, we are birds of the same feather. We should totally hangout. Booze's on me) Now you will see half naked people running in streets with their iPods on. No.. no.. Not Indians. May be because we are proud folk. Togadiya said so.

This spring may not be as good. Most of the people I know here are planning to go back before the summer ends. That makes me sad. It also makes me wonder on how fast time flies. (Philosphy starts.. )You say it is monotonous and boring but you never realize how fast life is actually moving. It has been more than a year already. It seems like few days ago that I landed in Chicago and forgot my bag in the airport. The life here becomes a routine after the euphoria of "I'm at onsite" wears down. You struggle throughout the week, waiting for the weekends to come and when sunday evening comes and you need to go to Walmart or Harris Teeter for shopping, you realize that the weekend you were waiting for has passed.  I read somewhere "  Time, by moments, steals away, First the hour, and then the day; Small the daily loss appears,Yet it soon amounts to years". You know what, before you know it, Angelina will be back.

I am Cold and yes thats Blood..

Note to wife : If you are reading this blog.. Are you really? aww.. thanks.. Also, I may hv spoken abt prettty girls etc, but you are the prettiest for me. I was just generalizing. You understand right?

The one? meh.

How difficult is finding a car? An automatic (i don't know how to drive a manual), low mileage, low cost car. How tough can it be? The answer is very tough. I cannot for the life of me find a good car. Now i am not asking for a fancy Merc or BMW for less price. No. I need a Honda or a Toyota or a Nissan or a Mitsubishi. Turns out the market is down. The dealer i went to few days ago almost cried about it. May be he was just trying to rip the foreigners. Who knows.
Seriously, if finding a car is so difficult, how difficult is finding a spouse? Love marriage or arranged, finding your life partner is increasingly becoming difficult. So they say. Or may be its just in the Havyaka community. I do not know what the girls are looking for in a guy. Special software Mojo perhaps. My mother is worried about finding a girl for my brother. He is currently working for the great NRN. He is studying for IAS as well. So plenty of whatever the Havyaka chicks are looking for. I did not want all this hassle. I finished college and as soon as I got into my job, I asked my best friend to marry me. Problem solved. Now, it is not a normal thing to get married when you have a eligible elder brother. But he was not interested in it and I couldn't wait. Its been two years and we are married and happy. I am married and she is happy. (Old joke I know.. but manchi joku kaadhanDi?)
Many people asked me how did you realize that she was the one? Ok not exactly the truth. Only one person has asked that till now. (that’s my wife.. ). Anyway for girls its pretty straight forward. As Ashish Shakya puts it, Indian girls look for just three things in guys. Fair, god fearing and not Rahul Mahajan.  Couldn't agree more about the third one. I'm not sure about first two though. What do girls look for? Money and looks? I am not sure. I heard that Sarah Jessica Parker from Sex and the City (**cough**horse woman**cough**) gives advice on such stuff. She is, as the hiphop lingo puts it, batshit insane. Just something to remember before you search for advice and read and say “Holy &*$%”.
For guys, although there's a lot to love about being single, (You save money on Valentine's Day gifts, you get to meet new and interesting people) it all about how pretty the girl is to you. If she can cook well, that’s just an added perk. Whoever said the best way to man's heart is through his stomach was wrong (A man who looks like a teletubby can get good chicks only in south Indian movies ) Also, if you already did not know it, way to a woman’s heart is not through her stomach. It may not bode well. This was as government likes to put it ‘janhith me jaari”.
If you ask any married person on advising about getting married, you would get the best advise possible. Don’t.  It puzzles me when feminists say whatever a man can do, woman can do better.. In fact, the guy would be doing all chores. You know feminist people, it would be better if she would just do the work. It’s ok if she doesn’t do it ‘better’. I may have played with the ladies pride like Tyson did with Holyfield’s ear. But hey.. it was just for fun. I am going to take Ashish Shakya’s help again. “Take it with a pinch of salt. If you have lemon and tequila with it, it’s even better.”
P.S:  There was no purpose in writing this. Its random and crazy. Just like my life right now.

La.. wait for it.. goriiiiii....

Shoaib Actor is retiring? The most controversial cricketer of all time (yes.. sorry pa Andrew Symonds.. You just missed out.. ok? ok.), the man who put liability in "reliability", the sportstar who reinvented the good old game of Lagori.. (eventhough he used 3 sticks instead of 7 slabs, he proved that old Indian games are actually better to watch than western games.. RSS should probably thank him.. and the tradition is being continued now by Slinga' Malinga, yes the great haired one..)

It has been 13 years. Lot of things have changed including Indian cricket team's attitude.. But one thing has not. Shoaib and his disciplinary issues. How will it impact the Pakistani cricket? What does this actually mean? well, apart from Mohd Asif probably OD'ing by taking in too much of that stuff which got him caught in Arab airport when celebrating this news, I am not sure if there will be much impact on cricketers.. You see Shoaib has hardly played proper cricket.. Apart from the publicity and one off matches where he would find his aim, he was as useful to the team as Ravindra Jadeja was to Men in Blue.

Cricinfo says "his averages in both forms are the fourth-best for any Pakistan bowler who took more than 150 wickets, while his Test strike rate of 45.7 is second only to Waqar Younis' 43.4" .. What does that say? Apart from Waqar is a great fast bowler? Shoaib can bowl well if he found his rhythm. That if is so big it makes Inzamam look petite. It was so rare that it looked as if the batsmen gave their wickets due to sheer shock. I remember two of his spells. His spell against Aussies where he made Ricky Ponting, the Waugh brothers and Adam Gilchrist call their mommies is one of the best I have ever seen in Test cricket. And the way he bowled Dravid and Sachin at Kolkata..

He hardly bowled a lot in tests.. He bowled more than 30 overs in an innings only three times. and most consecutive matches he has played is 7. You could never be sure when he was fit. His body parts kept breaking down, his run up from pavillion used to take more time than a Payal Rohatgi's acting career, he fought with his opponents, he fought with his teammates.. he hit opponents with the ball and he hit teammates with the bat.. So there probably isn't a cricketer who can be more unique. And he spoke with a Bledy Amrikan accent.. How many Pakistani cricketers can talk in English? let alone an accent..

"Today I step ahead for the most significant phase of my life and walk off," thats what he said "I have decided to say goodbye. This World Cup is my last and the coming matches in the tournament would be the last few of my international career. Mentally I wanted to continue perhaps forever. But I must make way for youngsters to take over." This coming from a man who had said "How many diamonds can you retrieve from one single mine; there has to be an end somewhere. I don't see any natural fast bowler after me." is interesting. Way to go chief.. By the way he also said "My pace is up there"..Up where? (Asif.. are you listening? I hope its not for you...)

But look at what he said.. What a lousy retiring statement.. This totally doesnt suit a Pakistani cricketer. There is no "for now" or "return on condition".. Learn from Mohd Yousuf. He is so classy in retirement statements. This is how he 'retired' - " This is my retirement. I have retired from international cricket. For now, this is it. For now this is my retirement.”. See how Yousuf carried out the backfoot defence? Textbook perfect.

Even with all his news making ability, he was more exciting than any other bowler with the exception of Shane Bond. Even when he was a total idiot, he was exciting and newsworthy. Also, I hope he is actually retiring because I dont want this write-up to be a waste.

Other aliens.. In your face.. ha.

Aliens can never be the same again.. Move over ET.. The greatest creature from outer world has arrived.. Simon Pegg and Nick frost have taken the idea of cute n' sweet alien and then punched ET's face with it.. The smoking, drinking, trash talking alien Paul is here everyone.. The quirky English comedy works.. This has to be the funniest alien movie I have seen. By far..

Paul is actually the name of the dog which is killed when the alien spaceship crashes. The name sticks and the alien is christened Paul. He talks in English fluently and its not the science fiction brain fuzz thing which enables him.. He just does. Thats bloody brilliant. I was tired of all the directors trying to show that aliens are alien to the technology we use. Sure, he has super power like other aliens do in other movies. but he is not that odd creature who is uncomfortable around earthlings.. and he doesn't have weird robotic way of talking. He uses more cuss words than a mobster in a Scorsese movie.. And he doesn't say "take me to your leader". He is the brain behind most alien stories for 70 years.. and now He is trying to escape from the leader, "the big guy" who is infact Sigourney Weaver (who does know a thing or two about aliens.)

The English nerds Graeme and Clive (Pegg and Frost) help him escape and are supported by a conservative christian who is shown the truth and a covert agent (Kristen Wiig and Jason Bateman). After the adrenalin filled journey, its the happy endding. The simple yet unpredictable storyline is carried very well by the cast. You sometimes feel that Seth Rogen actually tries to takes over Paul and ruin it.. But thankfully he has failed..

Simon Pegg.. What do I say.. the man cannot do anything wrong, can he? Blood and ice cream trilogy (Shaun of the dead, Hot Fuzz, third movie yet to come.) is awesome but he just went one step ahead with Paul... With his best buddy Frost, he creates his weird yet lovable creature. The chemistry between the two (three if you include the green wacky dude..) is very interesting to see. Their teamwork and effort is sincere.. More sincere than a group of college boys trying to get some weed.

Im going to give five out of five, ten out of ten, an A+, two thumbs up.. Whatever way you can put it.. It is not a family oriented movie.. But you can leave your family behind, go have fun. Trust me, you will have fun.

Breakfast... The desire...

I’m stuck here in the pizza burger eating country. There are a few Indian restaurants here but none are as delightful as the good old Darshinis in Bangalore. Every morning I wake up saddened by teh fact that I do not get to eat a proper south Indian breakfast. See, I do not have the time to cook and frozen food just doesn’t feel right... That’s when I miss the darshinis and upahars. Ghar ka khana is not an option here and bahar ka khana is not available.. The tacky title reminiscent of Bhatt family is because its catchy...

Breakfast is very important. It as important as an implant to an actress. Doesn’t feel complete without it. I for one miss it a lot. Breakfast that is. Without it I feel like Sreesanth bowling to Hayden who just hit the previous ball to boundary. Frustrated and ready to snap.

Life was so simple when you are at home. You would wake up, thank the big guy, if you are the conservative type and go brush. You would have tea ready. Sip tea, fight for newspaper with your sibling, then go for bath, thindi (or as Mysore/bangalore people say Tifan) ready. Food which is as yummy as Scarlett Johansson in bubble bath (Dosa, uppittu, chitranna, kottige, pundi, in some special occassions shyavige.. yumm. and with that you will hv chutney, sambar, jenu, rasayana.. slurp slurp..) My dad is a better cook than my mom. (Men are always better at cooking and my sweetheart would agree) and my dad was the cook at home. So dad ka haath ka khaana was awesome. Eat go to school/college.. No tension.. no problem.. For someone who always had lion's share in every food item at home, nothing could hv been better.

Moved to Mysore for engineering.. Suddenly realized how important a good breakfast is. Sure Nagaraja Bhatru, Shankara and Mukunda (that was one crazy dude..) prepared good breakfast (Sure MH guys won’t exactly agree. but when you leave MH, you realize the value) but it was nothing like home.. MH life is full of memories (good bad great weird etc.). Should probably write about it sometime. Byak to the ishtory.. Even though it was served at inhumane 6:30 in the morning, it saved us lot of money.. If you wake up late escaping from Warden ( the call "ಆಮಾಯ೦ತು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚಾರಿಣಃ... ಒಳ್ಳೆ ವಿಧ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳು.. ಏಳ್ರಪ್ಪಾ.. ಏಳೋ ಶಮ೦ತಾ..", Shammi was my roommate for all four years in hostel and deemed the warden as his enemy, still rings in my ear..), you had the wonderful Harsha bar(th). 1 Re Idly, 1:50 coffee/vada, 5 Rs variety rice (that’s the term my Bangalore office canteen uses),with what can only be described as supremely awesome mosarubajji.. Take a bow Harsha bar(th). I'm 27 now and never in my life have I had better food for less money. Hygiene? They have not heard of the word and probably think it is some phirangi disease.. That was the greatest place on earth for us. Well, along with GTR. GTR was little over the budget and had heard of hygiene. One Masale n coffee, your day is set.

Then had to leave and spend two months in Coimbatore. Apart from getting scolded by the traffic police for not knowing Tamil (ille saar konjam konjam teriyum.. ) and talking about Arsenal due to a fanatic roomie, the most memorable thing was the food. Tamil Nadu is the best place for Idly vada. Trust me on that. Although they dint teach us Tamil as a foreign language, we learnt tidbits and were successful in ordering different stuff (You don't understand. Tomato Rice is a KANNADA word for the waiter in Bangalore/Mysore. Not for TN one. You need to say Thakkali saadam.). Romba nice no?

Once I came to Bangalore, LCenter canteen was the only option. The food was as good as my cooking. Ghar ka khana you say? Meh.Cooking ran in family blood. It somehow ran away from mine. When I got married, I thought hard times are over.. Still LCenter canteen was my saviour. My wife isn’t a morning person. So avalakki bhath was the only edible thing..

And when i came to Amrika, here there was no option and I realized how important Indian breakfast is.. Eating bleddy corn flakes is the best option here. I’d rather eat pieces of cardboard rather. When you put milk, I do not think you can differentiate. Since waking up and waking up my roommate are the biggest tasks in the mornings, I sencerely hope someone gets a H1 visa or a green card and starts a blooming hotels. Or a dosa camp. Sadly my visa type will not allow me... O Darshini.. Where art thou…

trust and see what happens...

Why woud someone who trusts you a lot put you in a spot? You get to know that they are unhappy and you make your best attempt to get in touch with them and they simply ignore you. Is it because they want to know that they are not happy, but do not wish to discuss with you? For someone who wants you to know they are depressed, shouldn't they be making an effort to talk as well?

You are in middle of something, and you get to know that the person is depressed. You are concerned and you try to contact him/her. You mail/call/skype/gtalk or whatever you can. But there is no response. How do you feel? Scared that he/she has done something to self? How many people felt that way? or how many have done that to you? I figured out that it happens to me more often than not. Is it just me? or people love to play with me? I do not know.

Normally, I'm not an emotional person and im not that sentimentally attached to people around me. But there are some who have proved special and I care about them. And the sad part is they dont bother about it. Whenever I talk/meet, they paint the sad picture. But will not respond when I want to be there for them. They are busy shopping or going out with other friends.

Walter Anderson had said "We're never so vulnerable than when we trust someone - but paradoxically, if we cannot trust, neither can we find love or joy". I feel trust is the most important part of an relationship. Be it love or friendship. That is the best thing you can get. Not mutual admiration, not love, not the time spent together. Its the knowledge that you have the other person come what may and you will be there for him/her. There are people who misuse this. I'm not denying the fact. But if the person really is worth it, you will stand by him/her. Let me use another quote here. This by Ralph Waldo Emerson -"The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it's the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him with his friend."

Marriage they say is not a word but a sentence. Life long sentence. Love is blind and marriage is an institution. Its been two years since I entered the institution for clinically blind. We have maintained a long distance relationship pretty well, with our fair share of fights. She drives me up the wall sometimes with her attitude and mood swings. But i know how good she is and how much she loves me. Even with all her shoutings and yellings, I know that at the end of the day she will be there for me always.

If you cannot trust a friend, then are not allowing that friend to be the friend that you need them to be. I'm not sure if that made sense. OK, Why do I end up writing philosophical bullshit on my blog? I have no idea. Tried to stop but somehow I just cant help it.

world cup is here..

England lost to Bangladesh today. Ireland few days ago.. Looks like England are as comfortable against the minnows as Salman is when he sees Vivek Oberoi. Defiant etc but in the end he is the laughing stock. Minnow's performance is better than Vivek's career though. Couple it with the tie against India and a close win against SAf, England seems to have a penchant for cliffhangers. They are like movie climax where the hero and villain both are at the edge of the cliff and you are not sure who will end up and the best man wins. Usually the villain loses. or both die.

But clearly England have been the best team in this world cup if you wanted to see how close the matches can get. They were good against good teams and poor against minnows. Eye for an eye. Clearly. Losing Kevin Peter Pieterson (thats his real name. Named by a genius I presume) and the teenage girl who throws tantrums, Stuart broad was a big blow. It was the blondie who won them the match against the Proteas. Probably the tailenders did not want him to throw a hissy fit.

Should minnows be allowed to play in world cups? Clearly ICC, when I say ICC I mean BCCI, does not think so. Minnows mean less money and Sharad Pawar is not interested in something that means less money. I'm not sure if people really understood what he said or just assumed about it. Come to think of it minnows do not get much exposure. World cup is their only main tournament with test playing nations. And this is the only chance they get to beat England. They need to be included in all major tri series and tournaments.

I started watching world cup from 1992. One main piece of memory is of waking up early to watch and listening to my dad curse the Indian team. In 1996, "he who is treated like a god by millions" showed. For him, it may have been just another day at the office, but for everyone else it was awesome. He continued his form in '99, '03, '07 (one match only though). It has been frustrating to see my team throw it away all these years.

There have been some good memories too. All the wins against Pakistan, Prasad teaching Sohail a lesson, Ganguly and Dravid tearing Lankans apart, Inzy's knock against NZ in '92 ( I did not know how crucial that know was till some years later. Liked the way he carted the bowlers), The greatest ODI knock I have seen (It was by him. 98 vs Pak in '03), Nehra's six (Sometimes I wonder if he would fall apart any moment when he runs in to bowl. Reminds me of an old KSRTC bus).

Although I have stopped following cricket extensively (I follow only tests as that where my god plays.), its the world cup and it is a big deal. I usually dont predict or play the selector games because my guess never comes true. But on the other hand, since it doesnt come true, I'm going to say Australia will win the cup. And if they do not. expect Ricky Ponting's guard to break some more TV's and stadium equipment.

India can play well at times. But their bowling has much to be desired. Zak is the only trustworthy bowler they have. Bhajji is no longer the wicket taker he was. Munaf and Nehra can never be trusted. Sreesanth is a maniac who can go either way. I am not going to comment on Chawla. Since its our home turf, we can expect us to truimph as well. As they say, it ain't over till Yuvraj sings.

There are few things in cricket coverage will never change though. Ravi Shastri cannot say a sentence without his old manytimes reused bag of cliches, Rameez Raja and Arun Lal will never speak English properly, Sidhuisms dont stop, Kamran Akmal will not hold on to catches for long, Sreesanth cannot finisha a spell without being "himself".. Speaking of Akmal, the number of chances dropped by Akmal can be acknowledged as the one of the largest numbers in the known universe. Inifinity comes in third in the list by the way. In number two, we have the number of things that can be done by Ravichandran to a heroine's navel. and #1 is the clear winner. It being the number of hate comments/mails you get when you criticize him(or use great and any other batsman's name in same sentence) in Cricinfo columns.

Also, in other news, Japan was hit by a massive earthquake and Tsunami today. As I read somewhere, father nature came home drunk and whipped a belt at his kids. But the number of casualities was pretty low. Its amazing to see what good infrastructure can do. Indian news will never cover this topic though.

Silence is golden

How many of you have seen a silent movie? Some of us may remember Kamal's Pushpak. But apart from that can you name any other movie?

I recently saw two silent movies. Back to back. I have to say I was moved by the talent. When expressing the feeling voice modulation plays a huge part. but without the voice can a movie really touch your heart? (I wish Akshay kumar never acted ina talkie movie but then I can simply mute him... Same goes with Himesh's songs.) The answer is yes. Two propaganda movies, two silent propaganda movies turned out to be two of the finest movies I have even seen.

The first one is "Battleship Potemkin" by the immensely talented Sergei Eisenstein. It was released in 1925. This is one helluva movie.I am proud to say that I own a copy.. It is about sailors on a battleship protesting against the way they are treated. They refuse to eat the poor quality of food being served. In this mutiny, their leader is killed. The people mourn his death. During the gathering, the tsarist soldiers massacre the citizens. Finally the soldiers who were ordered to bring the rebels to "justice" refuse. The soldiers cheer their victory. The movie had a very strong message against the tsar rule. The movie failed to attarct people but become critically acclaimed. It is said that Himmler was scared that his army may get influenced and banned the army from watching the movie, eventhough Goebbels adored it.

The second one is "Metropolis". Directed by Fritz Lang and released in 1927, it came under heavy criticism by movie critics. The film shows the evil of capitalism. It is a love story as well. Between a rich man's son and a worker lady. It also has the conflict between two friends turned enemies. Im not going to write the entire story. you can probably get it from Wikipedia. The movie is significant for the way it has been shot. The lightings seem weird for us who have seen movies liike Avatar and other fantasy movies. But do not in any case, stop watching it. A marvellous movie. Recently they have found a copy which has additional scenes> the copy has been restored, they say. I cannot wait for the day it gets released here.. If it gets released here. Else we always have internet.

Both the movies are marvellous. There hasn't been a 'top movies' list without these two. These were the pioneers who showed us that movie making can be a skillful art rather than just entertainment or in those days, achievement. Both are pre-1930 movies which, even after 80 years still mesmerize you. We should be thankful to the brilliance of the people who made them possible.

Needed.. Peace..

Melancholy.. Someone asked me how is life treating me. Did not get the verb form of melancholy. So just said fine. Life as we know it is nothing like we know it. I realized it recently while planning my life. It always waits for us to take a decision and then decides to take the alternate route.

Staying away from loved ones, working your ass off, staying up till late, not getting enough sleep, still you do not wanna leave although you tell everyone that you have had enough.. Well.. If you are experiencing all these, it means you are at onshore. Or made a shitty career choice.. or both..

Why is it that some people have all the happiness? Im scared that blog is becoming too philosophical. Enough of this...

I read about verdict on Aruna Shanbuag. The poor lady has suffered enough. Cant they end her pain? The man who did this to her was released after 14 years. Even sadder part is he was charged only for assault and robbery, not the sexual offence. Why did they let him go? they should have hanged him, By his balls. Some government, some laws...

All hail vote banks..

Arjun Singh died recently. I dont know if he had a reservation quota set for who will be carrying him. Some people say that you should not speak ill of the dead. but this was no great man. Heck, not a good man either. He was vote bank politician. A wonderful manipulator. The "handy" party has always been good at supporting one family and one caste. but who am I to judge.

I am a Hindu. but that does not mean that I believe in everything BJP/RSS says. They have their own votebank politics going on. All these slogans about Hindu Jagruthi etc means wooing the Hindu's for their vote. May be thats how India is. People do more to their castes than the general society

Why do I hate Arjun Singh? Politicians like him are giving people reasons to divide and fight. Rahul Gandhi recently announced that RSS was as dangerous as SIMI. That doesnt make any sense to me (No,I do not what he was smoking). He looks like a promising young leader but talking like this is not going to help. Mommy is busy teaching Mr Manmohan Singh on how to be the Man.

Wait.. Am I writing a hate blog? yes. I am. This was the person who wanted reservations at IIMs and IITs. Now, I'm not against reservations. but there has to be a limit. General merit should be valued at such places. Its ok for all other schools and colleges. Everyone deserves education. IIMs and IITs are the best places to study in India. Students should get into them by their sheer merit. not because they have caste advantage.

This is the same guy who was the CM of MP during Bhopal gas tragedy. I'm not sure how good his conscience was when he chose to be silent instead of fighting against Warren Anderson/Union Carbide. May be his loyalty stopped him to do it. And his loyalty to one family instead of the country is another reason.

And there is the Churhat lottery and Kerwa Dam palace controversy. The scam with lottery and how he got a nice "house" built. Oh, there was a donation by Union Carbide as well for this. Ans then there was Deemed University status given to private educational institutions which did not meet the educational standards and had to be repealed later.

People who support him say he tried bringing social equilibirum.. Balderdash. That man was as vote centered as any other politician. Bottom line he is definitely not going to heaven. If the God fellow has a conscience that is. Thats one thing I firmly believe.

P.S: Read few obituaries. Not many people had good things to say. Wonder what mine would say...

Random depressing rambling..

Its raining in Charlotte. Is it beautiful? not exactly. Is it cold outside? Kind of. Why am I writing this? I don’t know.. May be because I’m shit bored. there is nothing to do.

What am I doing here? What do I do? Sit in front of the laptop and work during the weekdays and sit in front of laptop watching movies/teleserials during the weekends. Monotonous? You bet..

Charlotte, The queen city.. Named after a German princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg. And Mecklenburg is the county name. You think Americans don’t prefer Europeans? Check all the city names and places. Anyways, there is nothing much to see.. They say that the aero museum is nice, need to check the place. The one mall we like going to closes at 7 on Sundays and 9 on other days. That’s how active this city is.

This place is calm. So calm that it’s kind of eerie. You think I’m exaggerating? Try going for a walk anytime of the day. You will hardly see people out, even during summer time. Wal-Mart and the malls, that’s where you can see some people active.. And its not a very safe city either. Burglars and robbers are pretty active during winter. I have heard from my friends about how they were held at knife-point for their money. Well, as they say in Kannada, Ellaru maDuvudu hoTTegaagi.

It has been more than a year since I arrived here. The first impression was not great. The roads with potholes, not much of a traffic, cold and windy outside. The city has not made any efforts to change my impression though. I like snow but it snows twice or thrice only here. cold winters and very hot summers..

All my good friends were here when I arrived. People change when they go onsite they said.. Did not believe them. Well. now I have only one good friend, my roommate. He has been the company when everyone else moved away. thats life.

well.. There was no point in writing this blog. Dont bother to opine.

7 murders forgiven....

I had read wonderful reviews about the movie 7 Khoon Maaf.. So I decided to watch if its actually worth it.. but when I actually saw the movie, i realized that the reviews had not done justice to the movie.. It is haunting and brilliant.
I can now say that Indian moviemakers do match the hollywood in style. This has been the best movie I have seen since Black (Yes.. Im a sucker for Rani Mikherjee but lets all agree that the movie was a masterpiece from , the man who was once a class act, SLB.)
Now why am I rooting so much for it, you ask? Well. For one, the music is simply marvellous. Rekha Bharadwaj has got to be the best singer bollywood has seen since Lataji. Sorry ma Shreya. you are good but she is better.. ok? ok. Lets get back to the story. where was I.. yes. two songs stand out. Daarling and Bekaaran... And background music is marvellous im not even going to explain how marvellous it is.
Here's the story (SPOILER ALERT. If you wish to watch the movie, better skip the remaining part. blog ends here for you).
Piggy chops, with her luscious lips and long legs (oh yeah. she is pretty alright.....) is Susanne. A rich girl who is married to a major, Neil Nithin Mukhesh. The stable is managed by Goonga, a deaf mute.. He loses his leg during Operation Blue Star (yes.. the movie starts way back.). He is the typical jealous type bollywood pati.. You know who beats the crap out a lieutenant because he danced with PC etcetc. So one day the crazy major has a fight with Goonga and plonks an eye out.. so the Goonga, goonga and behra that he is, is now aadha andha too. So PC decides that her husband is crazy and the best thing to do.. Kill him. one down six to go.
She marries the singer John Abraham.. who besides cross dressing and stealing others songs, snorts drugs as well.. when police inspector Anu Kapoor catches a drug peddler and comes to PCs house for investigation, well.. the best thing to do. Kill him.. two down five to go.
She marries a Poet shayar Irfan Khan.. who romantic that he is, loves to beat/bite/whatnot his wife in bed.. well.. love hurts. literally. so the best thing to do. Kill him.. three down four to go
She marries a Rrussian smart guy.. who turns out to be a spy. Arun, the ex stable boy narrator, who has gone to Rrussia for higher studies thanks to the Rrussian sees the Rrussian with his wife and kids. well you know PC.. when the Rrussian comes back, she does the best thing to do. Kill him.. four down three to go.
the RRussian's murder becomes a big deal and guess who is the intelligence officer to investigate? its the deewana, mastana, parwana...Anu Kapoor.. To escape for arrest etc, she sleeps with him, making the cowboys proud. Anu, who I dont think ever got to do it with a pretty lass, comes back for more. so the best thing to do. Kill him.. five down two to go.
And now she is sad and tries to kill herslef.. the ever faithful butler gets the Bengali doctor Naseeruddin Shah (horrible Bengali accent btw..) . you know bollywood. Love happens.. and the doctor is actually broke and wants money.. he kills the butler for reasons I dunno.. In one of the finest scenes i hv seen in past few years, PC plays Russian Roulette with Naseer. Well.. starts with it at least... then she does the best thing to do. Kill him. Six done. last wicket..
well.. scared she tries to burn down the house and commit suicide.. Mausiji... (whenever saying suicide, i end it with Mausiji.... I blame Sholay.. . K coming back.. ) the maid (Usha Utthup in an excellent supporting role) dies and PC escapes. Every one thinks PC is dead... well turns out she is alive. in Pondicherry.. and finally becomes a nun. A cameo by Ruskin Bond here as the father.. (Not PC's father.. the priest father..). By committing herslef to chirst, seventh murder is complete.. Finally bollywood gives to India what the bleddy Cricket Team could never give.. reliable last man..

Well this is the gyst of the murders. I hv not done complete justice to the plot.. You would need to watch the movie to get full details anyway ( I dont hv patience to write the full script here..)

Priyanka Chopra is awesome as Susanne.. There are not many herione centric movies and she has utlized the opportunity. There are not many talented actresses out there. PC can fill the gap left by Madhuri, Kajol and Rani ( I include Rani since her last good movie was KANK. I hope she bounces back..). Like Natalie Portman winning all the hollywood awards for Black Swan, PC is going to sweep all the awards for this movie.

I have to admit that the movie is not perfect. Anu Kapoor doing it with PC has got to be the worst on screen make out in terms of the jodi. I have got a new addition to the worst things about bollywood (Topped currently by Ajay Devgan for his dance in Golmal series, and Akshay "huh huh huh" Kumar for his huh huh huh in.. every movie.. ). And why is John Abraham there? Dude can't act and there is nothing much for ladies (and some guys. I dont know your priorities.) either .

OK the post has run too long. Lets end it.. The first couple of lines are not true.. I actually wanted to watch Rango.. My room mate was too busy at the time, so settled for this movie instead.. Anyway.. A must watch. I'd give two thumbs up.. if anyone cares.

And dear PC.. Please get out of my head. Please. Thanks!
