It was a good week. We saw two movies. Two phenomenal
movies. Oh and there was IPL auction. We are not a follower of those things but
one thing caught our attention. Do you know R Vinay Kumar? He who was chased
around WACA and beaten like an adulterer in Iran by David Warner. The same guy
who performs well in Ranji matches but bowls dibbly dobblies and bleeds runs
when playing for India. He was sold for a million dollars in IPL auction. Yeah
we will let that sink. ONE BLOODY MILLION for him. We hope we are proved wrong.
For now, it looks stupid. But then Vijay Mallya and normal thinking rarely
comes in a same sentence.
In political news, Kapil Sibal blamed NDA Government for 2G
scam. Yes. He said they just followed the path given by NDA. It’s interesting
coming from a man, who never agreed that NDA did anything right. Also, remember
that it’s the same person who wanted to control what people update on Social
networking sites and who did not see any mistake done when it comes to CWG or
2G scam. He makes lot of 'interesting' statements for someone who has a law degree. We thought lawyers think before they speak. Anyway, even if he did say smart things, how will you trust
anyone who looks like ‘Wormtail’ in Harry Potter series?
Talking about crazy
and not trustable, Diggy Raja recently criticized Shahi Imam. Which surprised us
a lot. He has been so supportive of one particular religion than leaders of
that religion itself. Its ironic that they support another political party. Diggy Raja, who is also party in-charge of UP for elections, told that "Bukhari is the same person who
had praised Osama Bin Laden
and expressed anger over the his killing. He is a communal type of
man". This coming from same person who felt bad that OBL was not given
proper burial, is odd. As we said, politics and vote bank makes you talk some
quotable quotes. We are going to rate this highly on our Diggy scale. This will
be our new scale for crazy quotes by celebrities. Number one is still “Rahul
Gandhi was now a mature person with sound political instincts, and can become
the Prime Minister..”
Anyway, news over, we will tell you about movies we saw. Ah.
Probably the best movies we have seen in theatre along with Black Swan. Two
Oscar nominated movies and with Two Oscar nominated actors. Two dramas which
portray intense emotions of people who are going through tough times. The first
one was The Artist starring Jean Dujardin and the other The descendants
starring George “Yes, he can act too” Clooney.
We have always spoken about silent movies and how good they
are.. You can read about two good ones we spoke about here.
The Artist tells you about the great silent movie actor George Valentin and how
he struggles when the talkie movies enter the fray. Being a super star. His ego
prevents him from agreeing to the fact that something he loves and has been a
major part of him, is going away. He wants to prove that silent movies are
still a big thing and loses everything making a movie to prove that silent
movies can still make money. A girl who accidentally meets him, is on way of
becoming a big star and he is torn between love for silent movies and love for
her. Berenice Bejo as Peppy Miller is quite lovely and holds her own quite
well.
Finally, she makes him see where he has gone wrong and they
star together in talkie movie. They dance as the movie ends and you hear the
sound and dialogues for the first time. Oh, if you don’t feel good at the end,
you cannot be called a movie buff. What a brilliant example of movie as an art
form. The lead actors are a delight to watch. Dujardin can emote so well, he doesn’t
need words anyway to show his emotions. He would have been so well suited for
silent movies era. But you know the sad part is? There were only two people in
the entire movie hall. We and our lady. Now, that’s just pathetic. May be
everyone has already seen it or they are just not interested in watching great
movies. If you have not watched it, we highly recommend it. We cannot point to
a single scene which we did not like.
When you see a truly brilliant movie, you think this week
cannot get any better. But it just did. Just quite did. We saw The Descendants.
Clooney is Matt King, the trustee of a family trust that owns vast amount of
land in Hawaii. His wife is in Coma and will not make it. He has to let the
near and dear ones know that she will not make it. His family comprises of two
daughters. Little one is naïve and he is not sure how to handle her. The elder
one has history of drugs. The family comes together when they realize the
mother’s condition. Then Matt gets to know about a terrible truth about his
wife and he, along with family tries to cope with it. He tries to find the
solution and find inner peace. Sure it’s a tragic story. But when it is laced
with dark humour and some brilliant acting, it becomes a masterpiece. We will
tell you the sad part. There were four people in the movie hall. Better than
The Artist, but still not, in any way, good.
When we saw The Artist, We thought Dujardin was the best we
saw over the past year. But we were wrong. George Clooney is the best actor we
saw in the past year. Sorry Dujardin, We hope Clooney wins Oscar. It’s not your fault. For us, you were second
best of the year. As for recco, we are
going to go with both the movies. We are giving full marks both. But one is
little better than the other. IF you are in a position where you can watch only
one, we would say The Descendants. We will pity you for being in that
situation, but Clooney is better than Dujardin, slightly.
Really? For me, The Artist was better :)
